Not a lot of homeowners know this, but there are four types of faucets for residential properties and it’s important to know the difference between each one. To properly address an issue with your tap or to have it replaced, you must know what type of valve you have. This will help you find the parts or replacement you need if you’re facing issues with your current setup.
Ball – a single handle faucet with a ball inside of its spout. The ball inside allows the knob to move more effortlessly. Inside the body of the spout also includes metal springs and rubber components. These sink fixtures are the likeliest to leak due to all the parts involved. This type is the most common in residential homes.
Disc – this new-age valve has a single handle over a wide tubular body. A pressure cartridge inside the body of the valve combines and balances hot and cold water. Ceramic disks control the amount that flows, while the side to side rotation of the knob controls the temperature.
Cartridge – this can come single or double handled. This valve earns its distinction from that of a compression faucet is the feel you get when you use the handles to encourage the water to flow. The valve adjusts the flow by operating in an up and down manner while side to side movements control the water temperature.
Compression – this type separates the hot and cold water control through separate knobs. They are the oldest type and are prone to leak more so than any other types. Fortunately, if a leaky tap is ever a concern, it is usually only a washer replacement within one of the handles that is needed to effectively correct the problem and stop the leak.
A faucet may need replacing when leaks persist despite repairs, water flow is uneven, or parts are worn or corroded. Difficulty turning handles, noisy operation, or an outdated style can also signal it is more practical and cost-effective to install a new faucet.
For a small bathroom sink, a single-handle faucet is usually the best choice because it saves space and offers easy temperature control. Compact, wall-mounted, or low-arc designs also work well, keeping the sink area uncluttered while maintaining functionality and a clean, modern look.
Faucets with low-flow designs or aerators reduce the amount of water used while keeping the flow strong enough for everyday tasks. Some models are labeled as WaterSense certified, which means they meet efficiency standards without making washing or rinsing difficult. Installing these faucets can lower water bills and reduce waste, and many modern designs still provide smooth temperature control and reliable performance.
A badly worn faucet can leak heavily or fail suddenly, leading to water waste and possible cabinet damage. If the leak cannot be stopped, an emergency plumber may be needed to prevent further issues.
