Repairs involving the sewer have been a big, costly repair job for homeowners for decades, leaving them dealing with important rebuilding and patching afterward. The sewer line is placed deep under the ground and it runs from the inside of your home to the sewer system, often right under your patio, garden, or yard.
Before not too long, sewer repairs were done by digging them up from under the ground and replacing or repairing them. Just imagine having your whole garden dug out because of that. Or imagine having to drill through the flooring of your home to reach and fix a leak.
Fortunately, the advancements in the plumbing industry allow us to avoid all that hassle with methods of trenchless sewer repair.
Types of Trenchless Sewer Repair
There are several ways to repair a broken or leaking sewer line without digging a trench to reach it. Each method has its own pros and cons and your situation might call for a particular type of repair. When hiring a contractor, make sure they are specialized in the method you need.
- CIPP Lining
One of the most popular ways to repair a sewer without digging a trench is CIPP lining. It uses a lining that is flexible at first, allowing it to easily slip through the existing pipe. Once it’s inside, it’s inflated so that it perfectly molds after the existing pipe, covering and patching any imperfections. It then cures and becomes super hard, very smooth and durable, with a lifespan of up to 50 years.
- Slip Lining
Slip lining has been used for over a century, believe it or not, and it simply involves slipping a pipe with a smaller diameter inside the pipe with problems. This is not an ideal method and it might not be possible to use it in some cases. The major disadvantage of slip lining is that a smaller pipe can lead to other problems in your sewer system.
- Pipe Bursting
This method is the most eco-friendly, as it does not use any toxic substances to work, but pure mechanical force. A bursting head is fitted at the end of a replacement line and, as it travels through the old pipe, it bursts it, making space for the brand-new pipe.
The major advantage is that you will get a brand new pipe in place, without having to dig and without having to decrease the diameter of your piping.
- Spray lining
For sewer pipes with minor damage, like thin cracks or a lower degree of corrosion, spray lining can be a cost-effective, quick solution. It uses a spray that applies a coat of flexible resin on the interior of the pipe, forming a new pipe inside of it.
