Improve Water Conservation With These Helpful Plumbing Tips

It goes without saying that clean, fresh water is one of our most important resources and that survival is impossible without it.  Water is a limited resource, especially in times of drought.  Thus, it is extremely important that we learn how to conserve it around the house, drought or no drought.  Anytime Plumbing is an industry leader where saving water is concerned and has long been recognized for its efforts on how to improve your water conservation around the home.  The following are some helpful plumbing tips for accomplishing this goal.

Why is water conservation so important?

Nearly 70% of the Earth is covered with water and yet there are many parts of the world where clean water is in short supply if not non-existent in the most extreme situations.  That is why it is so important to keep our water supply clean and pure while learning how to conserve it on the home front.  So how do we conserve water at home? By being responsible and smart when using it.  Conserving water also means keeping pollutants out of it as well.

Furthermore, learning how to improve your water conservation will save you money on your monthly water bill.  You can literally save thousands of gallons by employing basic water-conserving techniques and having Anytime Plumbing install water-saving devices in your home (see below).  It’s basic math.  Additionally, water conservation saves energy.  To get water to your home or office, it has to be pumped from a centralized facility and that requires energy to do so.

How can you conserve water around the house?

California’s El Niño season was disappointing to say the least, especially further south of us.  Without the normal influx of water, conservation is paramount.  But you can do your part by employing water conservation techniques and re-thinking some of your water-using appliances.  Our experts know the importance of ways to do it and offer the following 4 tips will help you save water at home:

  • Check for plumbing leaks – a leaky bathroom/kitchen faucet or toilet can waste up to 10 gallons of water every day.  Keep an eye on your monthly water bill and watch for steady increases that happen when usage would normally be lower.  If you see your water bills increasing steadily, call Anytime Plumbing to inspect your pipes.
  • Consider changing your dishwasher or your washer/dryer combination – chances are, these appliances may be using water at an alarming rate, especially if they’re older or you haven’t done any preventative maintenance on them.  Consider replacing them with newer, energy-efficient models.
  • Reduce the amount of time you spend taking a shower – keep those showers to a maximum of 10 minutes whenever possible.  Furthermore, swap your shower head out for one of those water conserving low-flow models.  A low-flow shower head and a 10-minute shower will eliminate 15 gallons of water usage every time.
  • Replace those older toilets with newer, water-saving models – the toilets in your home are responsible for roughly 30% of your monthly water usage.  You can reduce that amount by replacing your older toilets with newer models that use about 1½ gallons of water compared to 3½ gallons that the older units were using.

What water-saving plumbing suggestions can we offer for how to improve your water conservation?

There are water saving products that we often recommend when trying to conserve water around the house.  Whether it’s in the bathroom, kitchen, or around the house in general, the following ideas and products will help you save money and help protect the environment as well:

  • Bathroom – install a low-flow shower head and replace your old toilet with 1.28gpf high-efficiency model.  Fix any plumbing leaks.
  • Kitchen – install a water-saving faucet or a low-flow aerator on your current faucet.  Don’t use the dishwasher unless it’s a full load.  Fix any plumbing leaks.
  • Around the house in general – don’t use your washing machine unless it’s full, know where your master shut-off valve is located, and fix any plumbing leaks.
