How Much Does It Cost to Replace Plumbing Under Kitchen Sink?

Depending on your sink, you’ll find a variety of different pipes underneath your sink. You have plumbing that feeds your faucets, along with a trap – which may be either an S-trap or a P-trap depending on where you live. The average cost to replace just the P-trap is between $150 and $250. This U-shaped pipe holds a small amount of water in the bottom of the U and is responsible for preventing odors from coming back into your home. If you notice foul smells, this is a strong sign that it’s time to replace the P-trap under your sink.

In general, kitchen sink drain pipes will need replacing when they start to leak, smell, and are generally too old. The cost to replace all of the plumbing under your kitchen sink is between $100 and $350 on average. However, costs will be higher if you are adding a disposal, need to have a special drain hookup for a dishwasher, or an additional faucet hookup.

Kitchen Faucet Replacement Cost

On average, the cost to replace just a kitchen faucet ranges from $120 to $300 – depending on the type of faucet. Meanwhile, installing a kitchen sink and faucet at the same time costs between $400 and $1,000.

Signs It’s Time to Replace Your Plumbing

Now that you know how much it costs on average to have your plumbing replaced, how do you know when it’s time for a replacement? Of course, plumbing is not meant to last forever, and the following warning signs indicate that it may be time to start thinking about replacing your pipes:

  1. Low water pressure. If you notice that your water pressure has decreased, this is often an early warning sign of plumbing problems. In this instance, you’ll first want to check your water heater, as a sudden loss in pressure can occur as a result of a faulty water heater. Although, a slower pressure shift may indicate leaky pipes.
  2. Discolored water. When the water that comes out of your faucets and fixtures is no longer clear, this should raise some major red flags. Pay close attention to the color of the water, as it can tell you more about the specific issue. Orange, yellow, or red water indicates that there’s rust in the water. Over time, rust and corrosion will result in holes in the piping. Water that is blue or green usually means there’s copper or brass in the fittings. Black water indicates there’s a growth in the pipes, which can be a huge concern, and pink water means you have a harmless organism present in the water.
  3. Leaks. Leaky pipes display a lot of warning signs. Both low water pressure and backed up drains can usually be an indication of pipe problems. In some instances, you may be able to tighten a gasket to stop dripping. However, you want to use caution to avoid breaking your fixtures and causing water to spontaneously gush out.
  4. Pipe material. The material that your pipes are made out of play a role in how long they will last. In general, there are two main pipes: water supply pipes and drain pipes. Supply pipes are usually made out of galvanized steel, copper, or brass, while drain pipes are commonly made of PVC. Brass and steel last between 80 and 100 years, copper lasts 70 to 80 years, and PVC lasts 35 to 40 years.
  5. Clogged or slow drains. A clogged drain may seem like a simple issue, but it could actually be a sign of a much deeper problem. In some cases, clogged or slow-moving drains may occur due to poor venting in your pipes. If the vents are blocked or damaged, you’ll need a plumber to come assess the issue and provide the necessary repairs.
