Green Plumbing Options and Tips

Going green is something that is highly encouraged in this world especially nowadays. Green plumbing isn’t something new. Accreditation programs that instill eco-friendly alternatives and green tips for interested plumbing contractors are in high demand among those in the industry. Green plumbing options encourage water and energy conservation. By using environmentally safe appliances and fixtures, and having the desire to practice eco-friendly habits, we can greatly reduce the amount of energy, greenhouse emissions and water waste. Alone, unattended leaky faucets account for up to 2,700 gallons of water waste within a year.

When sustainability is a major concern for a home or business owner, it’s wise for them to hire a plumber that practices eco-friendly techniques and uses plumbing alternatives that provide more sustainability. Not all plumbers put environmental safety and awareness at the forefront, but it isn’t impossible to find local contractors that offer eco-friendly plumbing services.

Ways to Make Your Plumbing More Eco-Friendly

  • Look into low-flow plumbing fixtures available. Low flow toilets, faucets and other similar products are widely available all over the world anymore, especially at home improvement stores, hardware shops and online. A plumber familiar with green practices will know of the best products out there to increase the sustainability of your plumbing system.
  • Trying to fix a plumbing issue on your own will often lead to worse damage and more expenses. Plumbers will have the experience and tools to properly conduct any correction necessary. Always contact a plumber right away if you have any concerns. Doing this will decrease the potential for worse problems which could lead to water waste and other unforeseen disasters.
  • Try not to use extremely hot water. Lower the temperature of your water heater to avoid overusing the energy it takes to heat the water. It is suggested that the water heater be kept around 120 degrees Fahrenheit. This will also decrease the cost of your energy bill.
  • In colder weather months, avoid freezing pipes by caring for them accordingly. Turn off the valve that leads to your outdoor hose and practice other habits that will decrease the chances of your pipes freezing. Pipes can burst or become dysfunctional when they freeze up. Inspect your pipes often during winter months and even use heating pads, thick foam sheets or a blow dryer to warm up the pipes as necessary.
  • Avoid getting anything down your drain including hair, food, oils, etc. These items will eventually clog your drain and cause worse issues the longer it is uncared for. You can unclog a drain on your own if it is easy to reach the problem area but if the clog is further down in your plumbing system, it is best to contact a plumber. Do not use liquid drainers in your drains. Most of them aren’t environmentally safe.
  • So, not only should you purchase reputable eco-friendly faucets, toilets and other plumbing accessories, but you should practice methods that protect you from wasting water, energy and money. Regular inspections or maintenance from a professional plumber with green practices is highly recommended.
